Academic Detailing

Industry Challenge

Busy Medicaid providers often find it difficult to review new information and updates on subjects that affect them, such as generic drug utilization, the preferred drug list (PDL), and the prior authorization (PA) program. Administrators need a thorough, yet efficient way to inform prescribers about Medicaid changes.

Solution

Face-to-face, one-on-one interaction is the best approach for providing information and education. HID’s Academic Detailing services maximize the benefits of this approach. Our programs, which follow the “detailing” model used by pharmaceutical manufacturers*, efficiently inform clinical providers on Medicaid programs and new developments.

The HID professionals who provide Academic Detailing services are called pharmacy specialists. These individuals, selected for their communication and organizational skills, are supervised by our Academic Detailing Coordinator, a licensed RN with many years of clinical and managerial experience. HID's pharmacy specialistsall trained in the PDL and PA processeducate Medicaid providers within their own practice on the appropriate and cost-effective utilization of medications.

* Pharmaceutical companies make concerted efforts to market directly to physicians. A common marketing method involves sending sales staff directly to the physician’s office to meet with the physician in person. In the medical industry, these sales visits are termed “detailing.” Drug companies have found this to be a cost effective way to reach busy physicians.
